In federal states, revisions of the constitutions of the federate entities are sometimes submitted to mandatory referendum. This is the case in Switzerland and in two Austrian Länder. Similarly in Spain, amendments to the Statutes of Autonomy adopted in accordance with a special procedure in the first few years following the constitution’s entry into force are submitted to mandatory referendum.
