However, in some countries, there are specific provisions stipulating that certain regulations relating to referendums must themselves be subject to mandatory referendum. This is the case in Latvia and Malta (in respect of the provision stipulating the constitutional provisions subject to mandatory referendum), in order to ensure that parliament is unable to get round the requirement for a referendum by amending the provision in question. This is also the case more broadly in Estonia and Lithuania for the sections of the constitution relating to constitutional revision, which set forth the cases where a mandatory referendum applies.
