(1) The Speaker of the Folketing shall notify the Prime Minister and the Minister of Social Affairs and the Interior about a referendum to be held on a parliamentary bill or a bill having received the Royal Assent.


(2) The Prime Minister shall promulgate the bill or the act in the Official Gazette stating the day of the referendum. A referendum according to sections 20(2) and 42(1) and (7) of the Act of the Constitution shall be held no sooner than 12 and not later than 18 week-days after its announcement. A referendum according to section 88 of the Act of the Constitution shall be held within six months after the Folketing’s final passage of the Bill.


(3) If a referendum is held under a special act, the Prime Minister shall announce the theme of the referendum in the Danish Official Gazette stating the date of the referendum.


(4) A referendum takes place in the same polling districts as do general elections.
